i love my life

so much

dowtown sacramento : split vision

last assignment of the semester for Photo-in-the-Field.
we were instructed to shoot anywhere in downtown Sac-town.
i fear there is no cohesiveness to these photos, other than the fact that they are all diptychs.
the diptychs were my own silly idea.
it tested my [not so hot] math skills and it did make shooting in this ole city that i see everyday a little something different.
and so did the thick morning fog. my goodness was it colddd.
i snuck off for the first hour to snuggle up at Old Soul, a bakery in an alleyway, a place that makes me believe in Sacramento as an incredible city.
and i like to believe in these kinds of things, therefore you can find me there anyday of the week, really.
anyways, i did get to shooting eventually.
this is what i found... in this order:

i think one of the most important aspects of playing the role of a documentary photographer is accepting the fact that everyone is actually doing something... except for me.

the athlete broke the record. the dancer is stretching before practice. they're kissing. he's smoking a cigarette in the morning. she's playing her guitar in the sun. he caught the last wave of the set. they're plowing the land, planting the seeds, picking the fruit. they're making pie. they're making history.

as the photographer, i'm not actually doing any of it. being aware of that separation is so crucial. i let myself stand back and be in utter awe/envy of my subjects. and then, of course, every bit of me wants to associate myself with them in some way... and the only way i know how to do that is with a camera.

today was a perfect example. i was on an assignment at Gladding McBean, a company that has been in the clay business for 125 years. skilled craftsmen... mixing, molding, sculpting. in the factory all day, everyday. broken windows let in the morning cold. microwaves heat up their tupperware lunch. they work with power tools in natural light. at the end of the day they have real solid objects that prove how hard they worked. take off the hard hat. see you tomorrow.

how Venice hangs

venice is twisted. it's backwards. its inside out and upside down.
every movement is pungent and vital to the experience of being there.
nobody in this sub-section of los angeles is just walking or sitting as normal people do.
obviously not...
