..i might revert my project back to the original plan: COLOR.
if i do, there are several images i have to leave out because their lack of color-interestingness.
on the flip side, there are some new ones i can include.
and it all feels a little more alive this way, don't you think?

The Mission District - round three

i just had a couple of really incredible days in the city. spent a lot of time in The Mission, exploring new areas of the neighborhood i hadn't been to yet. like i said, it was incredible, every moment.

somebody jammed up the good scanner in the lab so i just did these quick and dirty scans to at least get an idea of how things turned out... inpatience, maybe :)

"There are two constants about San Francisco's Mission District that have been true ever since Junipero Serra built his northernmost Spanish Catholic outpost that gave the neighborhood it's name. The first is that the Mission is forever changing. The second is that all change in the Mission is accompanied by anguished complaints about how much better things were before... it fully exposes the area's always juicy and often bizarre idiosyncrasies, making the tempestuous neighborhood a great source of offbeat humor." -Marcelo Rodriguez

i've tried a billion times to express it without seeming repetitive. it's been almost two years since this whole thing with italy began and i thought by now i'd get over it. i get over so many things so fast. but i guess not this. i feel it in my bones. i need it.

The Mission District - round two and a half

only spent about an hour in The Mission last weekend, and most of that time I was savoring a burrito at Taqueria el Buen Sabor. unreal deliciousness. but I did manage to shoot a roll. not sure that I'll use any for the final submission. with the exception of one[?].

[yes, this guy was also in another image, i keep running into the same folks]

just tryin to make a dolla outtah 15cent you know what i'm sayin

nice surprise :]

to my happy surprise, the editor for our university newspaper submitted one of my images to the California College Media Association. every year they have a competition between every university and community college in California and choose winners for different media categories. my image won 1st place for 'Best Feature Photo'.

it's really really nice to be recognized in a particular field of photography that i feel very passionately about and hope to make a career out of :).

here's the image that won. you may remember it, it's from the Frida Kahlo play I got assigned to last year. the same play i almost missed because I couldn't find the tiny little theater nudged in an alleyway near the train tracks.

i was so glad i did find it because i was blown away by the talented actors i got to experience from a perfect backstage view... especially her, Diana Tercero. it's the best thing in the world to get assignments where all you have to do is to react with a camera to somebody else's greatness.

judges' note: "Shannon captures the emotion of an actress portraying Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The drama created by the lighting, tears and expression is powerful. In this portrait of a Mexican artist, Shannon displays her own artistry."

pray for me? ;0)

remember the other day when i said i was calm-as-a-cucumber?
i think maybe the anxiety is trying to creep in now.
but there is exactly one month of school left and i plan to enjoy it.
so let's keep-it-together, here.
just breathe and do all of the following things ASAP!

-scan images from Mission Round #3
-work with Doug to choose paper for Senior Portfolio prints and perfect the digital printing process
-study for Art Photo Exam #2 and then ace the test, a B would be okay too
-make 6 more prints for Alternative Process (1 cyanotype, 1 argarotype, 3 platinum, 1 silver)
-Fashion shoot for Artficial Lighting assignment
-hit the streets with the YashicaMat for Mission Round #4 then develop & scan
-edit & finalize all 10 prints for Senior Portfolio
-study for Art Photo Exam #3, A... B... C... whatever
-Put together a digital portfolio for the Spring Photo Show
-Round up ten images for Artificial Lighting final portfolio (this may require a few studio shoots), have them printed
-window mount Alternative Process prints
-window mount Senior Portfolio prints
-Turn it all in and rejoice, rejoice, allelujah!

shark town

spent a little time in Pacifica on Friday morning. Pacifica is just about 12 miles outside of San Francisco and there's a pier there and some old saloons and the sand is black and the waters are sometimes shark infested.

okay, so i know that i was just dissing on summer in that last post.
but, i gotta admit, sometimes my heart aches for those perfectly sunny north county days.
truth is, i'm an awful surfer. probably even more than ever now.. it's been years.
but, i tell ya, theres nothing more i'd rather do tomorrow morning than paddle out into the water and maybe just sit on my board and feel the ocean beneath me.

winter, stay.

been having a great little storm these last couple of days.
last night i was practicing some residential/architectural photos for a class.
was out in the back yard and my hands turned to icicles while waiting for the right light.
see the wind rockin' these trees?
i'm really hoping this cold stays around just a little bit longer :o) summer can wait..

baristablues

[So,] I'm so glad that I took this job at Peet's. because up until this point I had this cute little idea that I'd just love to be a barista for the next several years and put off getting a career-type job. buuut, you know how it goes. after exactly two months of the coffeeshop life, I've managed to get it out of my system. what I mean is, i'm over it. and as soon as I graduate (in 41 days), i'm more excited than ever for the jobsearch to begin. i think there might be something BRILLIANT/AMAZING on el horizon :D wooooooyeeeah!

soul sistahs

Kayla and I had be planning on Monday night forEVAH.. counting down the days..finally it was April the fifth and we were headed to Berkeley to see Patty Griffin. and we saw her. and it was insane. so sooo good.

so good, in fact, that when Wednesday night rolled around...we couldn't help ourselves. there was still time to get to her San Francisco show. so we hopped in the car. drove and drove and the sun set and set. and we made it to The Fillmore just in time for PattyG Round Numba 2! and she melted our faces off! and she melted our hearts too... all! over! again!

..:..:...

6 more weeks left of school.
as in, forever.
somehow i've lost the anxiety and frenzy of it all.
i can't find it.
i feel very calm.
cool as a cucumber.
