These images belong to my Aunt Lori. She was born in New York and, recently, after a 40 year absence had the opportunity to return for a visit. I think that this trip was one of the highlights of her life. I loved to listen to her go on&on about the time she spent there. I can clearly remember her describing the experience she had visiting ground zero, she said when she was there the tears just started coming .... being there gave her goosebumps. I'm so sad and angry that tragedy strikes the way it does.... humans inflicting so much hurt and sorrow onto other humans. JERKS. So, in loving memory of my aunt and in honor of the magnificent NYC I wanted to share these beautiful photographs that she took there.

She was late to everything. Hours into a birthday party or wedding or holiday gathering I'd still be looking around, anticipating her arrival. When she finally made an appearance I'd catch her eyes from across the room and, simultaneously, we'd let out a big "EEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!". Then she'd tell me, "get the hell over here and give me a hug you little brat!". That was my Auntie Ewwy. And for the remainder of whichever family shin-dig we happened to be at that day, I would gravitate towards her. It was my favorite thing in the world to hang around and bug her. She was the sassiest lady I've ever known. So spirited, so upbeat. Just about everything she said made me laugh. I will hold her close to my heart forever.

well one awesome thing that happened was that we arrived to the airport for our red-eye flight to New York and when we were waiting in line for our boarding passes we spot none other than our dear old friend BB. she happened to be on the same flight as us so we grabbed a beer in the terminal. and while we were waiting to board at the gate she was called up to the counter and told that her seat had been changed. to the row exactly behind us. fate. beautiful. so we flew across the country together and then there we were after an entire night of flying, disheveled and confused at JFK.

a little while ago i found this globe up in the barn and decided it needed to be in my bedroom. you know, for inspiration. i thought i'd be spending a lot of time agonizing over where i should up-and-move-to next. i figured i'd start with the world, and narrow it down from there. but, as much as I'd like to believe otherwise, leaving this place terrifies me. so i ended up ignoring that whole world for several months and did everything i could to try and find a reason to stay right here. i even tried my best to establish that reason in a boy, but that really didn't go as planned. just as nothing ever does. TWIST! so for now, i'm giving up on a grand schematic plan. i'm going to do this in tiny little bits. vignettes, if you will. first up... New York City. leaving on the first day of Fall.

summer break! always promises to be interesting. sometimes dangerous, too.
i will take the boredom and the uncertain daily structure and let it fester into fright.
and the nerves impel me to do foolish things. something, anything, to keep myself entertained, at least.
this summer has been no exception. in fact, this summer has been the epitome of it all.
but its all been quite beautiful. and certainly unforgettable.
everyday, i'm intrigued.
and somehow, all this, has tricked me into stumbling upon a plan for what's next.

One warm summer evening, two of the most kind and genuine people I've ever met, married each other. They transformed a backyard into a cozy and magical place so that hundreds of their friends and family could join them in celebration. it just so happens that i work with some of the coolest kids in all of sacramento. and last night they put on a crazy beautiful show. it was magic. nicole and justin (a.k.a. Van Der Neer) made all these clothes from scratch! out of thin air! and jules (a.k.a. Sea Of Bees) composed for the fashion show a breathtaking song. i'm glad i was there to witness it all take place.

This year, I spent summer solstice northwest of here. I gathered on the tiny San Juan Islands with people from all over the world to witness Emily & Jamie be married. It was the longest day of the year, yet the beautiful couple and their wonderful guests were able to fill every last moment with joy. Here are some of my favorite moments.

can i tell you about how good it feels to be this free?

everyday it sinks in a little more. i'm done with school. and it feels like gold. silver and gold! don't get me wrong... i have been working a lot a lot! last week i did 35 hours of the barista thing and also a couple of photo shoots. indeed, lots of networking too, on the prowl for the next big thing. this has kept me a busy girl, but nothing, nothing at all, compares to what were the confines of school. there is a new-found liberation to behold here and i'm in love with it. its glistening in the details. mostly, i like having the stamina and the brain space to be captivated by friendships. to have the ambition to wake up earlier than necessary, just to watch the world cup with good friends. and then to stay for lunch, because they do insist, but really because i want to and that focaccia smells incredible. and in the same day, i arrive at the coffeeshop at least two hours before my shift begins... to sit and be merry, because i can, and it's a lovely place to be. i hope some people i know will meet me there. and they do. and their presence in that moment means the world to me. we welcome the free joe and laugh at great silly things and walk down nearby neighborhood streets and then make a picture like the one below. later that night.... okay! i'll join you for sushi! i usually hate sushi, but this time i'll try my best to love it. and i do.

i went for many reasons. i like the way that navigating around the city makes my brain work. i like the way i believe by going down this street or up that street that, maybe, i'll find the answer to something. i like the way i feel pretty there. i like the way i get all wrapped up in it.

but.

then.

i catch my breath at the top of telegraph hill. i read a few Ginsberg poems in a rocking chair by a window. i watch him closely as he stirs the milk into my coffee. a certain rolling stones song plays. and finally, i have an epiphany about the importance of backyard bar-b-ques.

and i realize.

this city is not the place for me to live. not right now.

obviously i've been highly considering it.

and that was the question i arrived with.
so, in fact, when there was a break in the storm and the shadows ran wild..i did eventually find an answer to something. down that street. and up this street.

It is, of course, the idiosyncrasies that lured me into the Mission district of San Francisco. I went there in search of quirky moments and I had this feeling that their quirkiness would be enchanted by the succulent colors and the odd but graceful juxtapositions that surround them.

I allowed myself to be captivated by this and before I knew it, I too, became part of the idiosyncratic nature of the streets. It was clear that I didn’t belong there and was seemingly contributing to some kind of change that would soon be complained about. I was like the famous bandit, Pancho Villa, stealing away moments that didn’t even belong to me. Just like the Spanish Missionaries did to the Yelamu Inidians on the same soil in the 18^th century. Also similar to the way the Irish and German immigrant workers overtook the Mission neighborhood during the European settlement in the city. It wasn’t long after World War II that the Mexicans captured it and made it theirs and still struggle to keep it as their own today.

So, no matter how many times I move through the space, with wonder in my eyes and Yashicamat in my left hand, I can’t help but feel like one of those bandits; operating in an isolated area, trying to become notably proficient at something at the expense of my opponent. However, as I pointed my camera up or down or across the street and looked at the people through glass, I began to realize I wasn’t the only outlaw hanging around the district.

College: A Retrospect, Part I

I took this shot in September 9, 2005 after my very first day of college classes. At this time I lived in an apartment on campus and the ocean was about twenty miles away. However, I made a promise to myself that I would make time to go to the beach every single day. And I did. This beach, the Del Mar Dog Beach, became a favorite. The picture was taken with the Canon PowerShot that I won in a raffle on the day of my high school graduation. Little did I know [well,maybe i knew?], that camera and those daily solo adventures would greatly shape me into who I am and what I do today. Oh, and note the headphone wire... probably Death Cab for Cutie's "Plans"... just a hunch.

i just had a couple of really incredible days in the city. spent a lot of time in The Mission, exploring new areas of the neighborhood i hadn't been to yet. like i said, it was incredible, every moment.

somebody jammed up the good scanner in the lab so i just did these quick and dirty scans to at least get an idea of how things turned out... inpatience, maybe :)

The Mission District - round two and a half

only spent about an hour in The Mission last weekend, and most of that time I was savoring a burrito at Taqueria el Buen Sabor. unreal deliciousness. but I did manage to shoot a roll. not sure that I'll use any for the final submission. with the exception of one[?].

to my happy surprise, the editor for our university newspaper submitted one of my images to the California College Media Association. every year they have a competition between every university and community college in California and choose winners for different media categories. my image won 1st place for 'Best Feature Photo'.

it's really really nice to be recognized in a particular field of photography that i feel very passionately about and hope to make a career out of :).

here's the image that won. you may remember it, it's from the Frida Kahlo play I got assigned to last year. the same play i almost missed because I couldn't find the tiny little theater nudged in an alleyway near the train tracks.

i was so glad i did find it because i was blown away by the talented actors i got to experience from a perfect backstage view... especially her, Diana Tercero. it's the best thing in the world to get assignments where all you have to do is to react with a camera to somebody else's greatness.

spent a little time in Pacifica on Friday morning. Pacifica is just about 12 miles outside of San Francisco and there's a pier there and some old saloons and the sand is black and the waters are sometimes shark infested.

[So,] I'm so glad that I took this job at Peet's. because up until this point I had this cute little idea that I'd just love to be a barista for the next several years and put off getting a career-type job. buuut, you know how it goes. after exactly two months of the coffeeshop life, I've managed to get it out of my system. what I mean is, i'm over it. and as soon as I graduate (in 41 days), i'm more excited than ever for the jobsearch to begin. i think there might be something BRILLIANT/AMAZING on el horizon :D wooooooyeeeah!

so good, in fact, that when Wednesday night rolled around...we couldn't help ourselves. there was still time to get to her San Francisco show. so we hopped in the car. drove and drove and the sun set and set. and we made it to The Fillmore just in time for PattyG Round Numba 2! and she melted our faces off! and she melted our hearts too... all! over! again!

spring break officially started today at about 11:11am

i drove straight home from class and took a several-hour-nap

recovery from a few good days in the city

then i awoke and made some iced tea

went out on the town, my town, for once, and took some photos with Kels

watched a handsome boy drink his wine

and that's all

i dig shooting here to the utmost... enjoying sun or rain or fog or whatever the city brings, guessing my exposures, cheap hair cuts, guacamole breaks, watching the cops cruise by on their dirtbikes, sidewalk convos, "yes this old camera still works--really", dodging ice-cream-man push-karts, walking the same blocks a thousand times, graffiti on churches and houses and cars...

you know i love this kinda crap. can't wait to go back over & over again.

i've been such a whiner lately. especially about school. but the truth is, its not really so bad. even saturday class. campus is deserted. on my walk to class i can sing in the echo-y tunnels. and the building in which our lab is held is friggin rainbow colored with a balcony that manages to capture the brightest of light. pollen flying from the trees, nudey photos and friends. check it out ..

Envelope Show

every graduating senior class does what they call an Envelope Show. at the beginning of the semester we are handed an envelope ... inside the envelope are objects and directions that former graduates decided to pass on to us for "inspiration" in making a photo. its an exercise in creativity... but mostly it's to teach us how to put on a gallery show. each one of us will be displaying our image at a show which we have organized at Beatnik Studio downtown... opening reception is Friday March 26th at 5pm... would love for you to come :]

the contents in my package were a bottle with a message inside. the message turned out to be directions which read: "put your own message in this bottle and take a picture of it floating down a body of water. remember to tell us what you wrote". so i wrote down some Emmylou lyrics. i put 'em in a bottle. and i found a giant puddle.

at school, so many of our conversations are centered around the formal elements and patterns within a body of work. within that, one of the main topics is, of course, color. i'm becoming obsessed with organizing color schemes and so these are just mere exercises to get my fixxx.
